🚨 LATEST AI NEWS

ANTHROPIC’S NEW & IMPROVED AI CHATBOT

Big news in the AI world: Anthropic, an AI startup, has just unveiled their newest text-generating AI model called Claude 2. The AI chatbot race with ChatGPT, Bing, and Bard just got a lot more interesting.

  • Claude 2 is an improvement over the previous model, Claude 1.3. It's more adept at a range of tasks, from acing a multiple-choice bar exam, passing a U.S. medical exam, to better performance at coding.

  • They've put two years of hard work into making this new model more intelligent and more aware of its limitations. Plus, Claude 2 has been trained on more recent data which contributes to its enhanced abilities.

  • However, Claude 2 isn't flawless. There are instances where it may respond inaccurately or produce inappropriate text. To mitigate this, Anthropic employed a system called "constitutional AI" which helps guide Claude 2's responses according to a set of defined principles.

Claude 2 is available for beta on their website in the US and UK. If you don’t live in those countries, you can head over to poe.com and use it there too.

🌎 AI IN PRACTICE

CAN AI BECOME YOUR HEALTH FORTUNE TELLER?

Imagine a world where your smartwatch could tell if you're likely to develop Parkinson's 7 years before you start showing symptoms.

Scientists at Cardiff University made this concept a reality by analyzing motion data from smartwatches.

  • Parkinson's affects over 10 million people globally. Symptoms include decreased physical activity, uncontrollable tremors, and, in severe cases, loss of breathing and heart function. It's treatable but not curable, and early detection is challenging due to costly clinical tests.

  • The scientists partnered with the UK Dementia Research Institute and used the UK Biobank project, which includes health data from over 500,000 people. They examined data from participants who later developed Parkinson's, collected from wrist accelerometers worn for a week. This data allowed them to retroactively analyze how Parkinson's developed.

  • To validate their insights, the researchers trained a machine-learning model on various types of data, including accelerometer readings, genetic screens, lifestyle descriptions, and blood chemistry. Interestingly, models trained only on accelerometer data predicted diagnoses just as accurately, suggesting that motion data is a key indicator of the disease.

This breakthrough in Parkinson's detection could lead to earlier treatment, potentially preventing some of the disease's most debilitating symptoms.

However, this brings up questions about data privacy and misuse, especially when it comes to health insurance. So it's vital to ensure secure storage of private data and to only share health-risk information with certified healthcare staff.
